Both are chronic diseases, but in the case of Lymphedema, the accumulation of lymphatic fluid takes place in the legs and arms and could even occur in one of the extremities.
In the case of Lipedema, it consists of the accumulation of fat cells, lymphatic fluid does not accumulate. It usually takes place in the legs and in both extremities. According to World Health Organization (WHO) is a "Diffuse non-focal inflammation of the fatty tissue generally located on the legs, thighs, hips and upper arms". It should not be confused with lymphedema. "
Lymphedema can affect both mens like women, although the female sex is more common. Lipedema is a disease typical of women.
Another major difference is that lymphedema can begin in the childhood, while lipedema is more common to start in the adolescence and it is symmetrical, unlike lymphedema, which is most common asymmetric.
More important differences to highlight between these two diseases
Lipedema is usually hereditary and once this disease is detected, a female family history with the same or similar problem is usually detected. It is common for it to appear after pregnancy or menopause.
Lipedema should not be directly related or treated with diet and physical exercise only, since it is not a consequence of being overweight. But it is very common that professionals initially identify it as obesity, which causes a delay in the correct diagnosis and therefore a delay in starting treatment and curing it.
